Chillicothe and Ross County are served by three federal highways, two railroads and an airport that can handle major aircraft.
Highways
About 60 percent of the population of the United States is within a day’s drive of Chillicothe and southern Ohio. U.S. 35 is of interstate quality from Gallipolis on the Ohio River and runs northwest through Ross County to Dayton and I-75. It takes about 70 minutes to get from Chillicothe to the Dayton area.
U.S. 23 is four lanes from Portsmouth on the Ohio River through Ross County to Columbus, intersecting interstate routes 71, 70 and 270. It takes only 35 minutes to get from northern Chillicothe to I-270. U.S. 23 to Ohio 316 takes you to Rickenbacker Airport and the new intermodal facility.
Railroads
CSX and Norfolk Southern both serve Ross County businesses and industries. Both routes run north-south and have spurs available at several sites in and around Chillicothe and southern Ohio.
Airport
The Ross County Shoemaker Airport is six miles northwest of Chillicothe. The main runway is 5,404 feet long and 100 feet wide allowing for single-wheel planes of 30,000 pounds and double-wheel planes of 60,000 pounds.
